The quote, in its various forms, has been used by thousands, and it seems to mean different things to different people. Some people use it as a general statement about how one should live.

Others, still, use it as a "moving on quote" to build themselves up after a disappointment or break-up. I suppose to some, it's just a saying on a door mat!
If you're like me, however, you've probably wondered where this saying came from. Who wrote it? Well, variations of it have been attributed to Robert Louis Stevenson and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
The phrase appears on plaques, posters, prints, license plate holders, bracelets, rugs, and mugs. You see it on bumper stickers and blog headers. It's the favorite tag line of many in the work place, and it's on plaques hanging in many homes.
People often use these quotes as words to live by, defining a successful life. But, what you may not realize is that those sentiments are actually only a small part of a poem, a prize winning definition of success by Bessie Anderson Stanley (1879 - 1952).

Incorrect Attributions
The live laugh love quotation comes in many flavors, but the original poem has been incorrectly attributed and misquoted many times over the years.
Bartlett's apparently stopped carrying the quotation for a number of years, and the history of it was apparently ignored for a long time.
Spiritual Wiki lists the quote with correct attribution to Bessie Anderson Stanley and states that it is wrongly attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson.
According to Jone Johnson Lewis, the Emerson attribution is, indeed, incorrect. The discussion goes a bit further, however, stating that the following quote is attributed to Emerson...
To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.
Although it is similar but not identical, Lewis tells us the Emerson attribution for this quote is also incorrect. So, is this quote a mangling of the Stanley poem? Perhaps.
There's a post at gaiam.com that gives the nod for the Stanley poem, word-for-word, to Robert Louis Stevenson, which is obviously also incorrect.
There's an interesting post on Robin Olson's site on the truth behind success detailing an email exchange with a granddaughter of Bessie Anderson Stanley.
The longer version, "live well, laugh often, love much" as well as the shortened "live, laugh, love" are both extremely popular as slogans on all the items and products I've mentioned, and probably quite a few I left out.
Adding up the quote variations, this may be the most famous success quote of all time. The shortened version, live laugh love, is practically an industry in and of itself. It has become a saying that is regularly quoted and referred to by thousands.
