The history of lingerie goes back for hundreds of years.  The history of Michael and Shelley Chadwick of Chadwick’s of London Cotton & Lace, Lingerie & Underwear boutique in San Anselmo, Mill Valley and San Francisco goes back almost as long. 

Growing up in Manchester, England, Shelley and Michael knew each other from childhood as their families were good friends.  Michael’s great-grandfather was an importer of hosiery from Eastern Europe and Shelley has always loved beautiful lingerie, it was a match made in heaven. 

They knew each other in middle school however it wasn’t until the early 1980’s when they met again in a group setting in their thirties that the relationship kindled.  They were slow to romance and took their time, or, as Shelley says, ”to see each other in the right light.”   Thirty years later they are as committed to each other and in love as ever.

It was Michael’s mother who visited a fortune teller and was told that Michael would find his fortune out West.  When he told the story to Shelley they both looked at each other and said “Why not?!” So, with a joint spirit of adventure they packed their small bags and headed to the States with a 6-month visa in 1984. 

Michael took a sabbatical from a college teaching career and Shelley resigned from community and young adult counseling and they headed to sunny California after many long cold and wet years in England.

It soon became clear, after traveling throughout the state, that California would be a great place to settle down in and call home.  However, the pound was doing dreadfully and they had to think of making some money before it all ran out.  As luck would have it they stumbled upon a swap meet out of pure curiosity only to discover that it was just like the flea markets they knew at home in England.  While wandering the aisles they saw that one vendor was doing quite well selling men’s underwear and the idea struck.

After a visit to friends in Walnut Creek, the Bay Area opened its arms and the Sausalito Market became their stomping grounds.  With Michael’s family connections to designers and makers of fine lingerie and what we know as long underwear, they pooled their funds together and had a few items shipped over.  Folks hadn’t been exposed to the Pointelle which is a very English, very fine cotton product and it and was an instant success. 

Sunny Bay Area flea markets could have kept them going for years with the 10 year draught they landed in the middle of but when the rains finally arrived three years later it was crystal clear that they would need a shop.  As luck would have it, while perusing the local paper, Michael came across an advertisement for a sub-lease on Throckmorton Avenue in Mill Valley and jumped at the chance.

That was in 1987 and as Shelley describes, “everyone had burned their bras and the ladies were looking for new ones.”   It was also the time when beautiful lingerie was coming back into fashion and the timing couldn’t have been better.

Shelley and Michael bought a home in San Geronimo and had their daughter in 1991.  Michael’s mother was visiting from across the pond and on a morning walk through downtown San Anselmo with the baby carriage she saw a “For Rent” sign on the window of 526 San Anselmo Avenue. 

Later on the drive to the airport she told Michael that that was the location they should get for a second shop.  When Michael told Shelley they looked at each other with a sigh knowing she was right, again.  In 1994 they lucked onto another great location on Chestnut Street in San Francisco. Chadwick’s of London’s have been a part of Marin and San Francisco for 25 years.

In the early days, San Anselmo was still recovering from the 1982 flood and threats of high waters were (and will likely always be) on every merchants mind in the rainy seasons.  Shelley and Michael have lost track of the times they have emptied the shop floor of merchandise it has happened so often.  Though they lived outside of town their landlords were ever vigilant look-outs and would regularly update the Chadwick’s of any water movement from the bridgeway by the shop.  Not only would they give updates, but they would often help with the moving of merchandise.

When the 2005 flood hit— the weeks of saturation—they knew it was really only a matter of when and not if, so the Chadwick’s were on the ever ready.  Around midnight the night before Shelley woke up Michael and their daughter and they headed down to clear things to higher ground and furniture into their car.  As luck would have it they were driving away and could see the waters rising onto the street almost chasing them out of town.

Shelley’s best and fondest memories of having a shop in San Anselmo are of when the community members poured out their support of all the merchants after the 2005 flood.  People would come in and buy something small and let them know that they were doing the same for every shop in town.  So many people did this that that is a big reason they were able to stay in business.  The love and support they saw with the town wide event “Put the Heart Back In San Anselmo” is something they will never forget and why they absolutely treasure being a part of such an incredible community.

With a history steeped in beautiful under garments and a friendship turned to love it is no wonder Chadwick’s of London has stood the test of time in San Anselmo, Mill Valley and San Francisco.  You could probably shop online and save some money, but you won’t find the quality, service or selection at your fingertips that you’ll trust and cherish for years to come.  What the Chadwick’s offer is timeless and we hope they’ll be around for another 25 years.
